HyperTech: Max Energy Sport for VQ37DE

HyperTech has been around for 25 years and realizes the aftermarket is always in need of a low-cost and easy to use tuning solution that owners can install themselves. Even if there are no mods to the vehicle and users are looking for a few extra ponies in no time, Hypertech offers a sound solution.

With the tuning scene becoming more mature in North America, it is widely known that bolt-on upgrades often require tuning to be efficient. In some cases, the lack of tuning actually reduces horsepower when a component it bolted-on because ECUs just don’t understand what is happening. When tuning solutions first became available, they were cost prohibitive but today many are easy to use, do-it-yourself solutions. One such system is from Hypertech, a pre-tuned computer that can make power and improve fuel economy on modern vehicles like those powered by the new VQ37.

HyperTech has been around for 25 years and realizes the aftermarket is always in need of a low-cost and easy to use tuning solution that owners can install themselves. Even if there are no mods to the vehicle and users are looking for a few extra ponies in no time, Hypertech offers a sound solution. The Nissan VQ37DE motor is renowned for its efficiency, producing 332hp out of only 3.7L naturally aspirated. The high-compression motor produces loads of torque and is highly regarded for its instant response. Hypertech engineers set out to see just how they would extract more from a motor that many thought was tuned to perfection right out of the gate.

The Hypertech Max Energy system is a simple plug and play device with measurable results. The device simply plugs into the OBDII diagnostic port and the setup requires a few yes or no questions. After the setup, the vehicle is ready to roll using the designed octane you select. Since the G37 and Nissan 370Z both use high octane, the tune requires high octane to be used at all times. If your vehicle can run on low octane, then the Max Energy Sport is supplied with two fuel maps, depending on which is in the tank. The drivability of the car is exactly the same. The fuel economy will improve at constant throttle and when provoked, will make more horsepower and torque. How much horsepower and torque varies depending on the car, but in the case of the VQ37DE the numbers are impressive. On the dyno the G37 made 6hp and 10lb-ft of torque bringing the total up to 338hp with 280lb-ft with a broader power band.

There are collateral benefits to the Max Energy Sport system beyond the power gains and fuel saving. The system allows for reading diagnostic codes right on the screen and they can also be cleared when desired. Should your car have any sort of error code, the unit reads and displays the details right on screen saving time and expense at a dealer. Users can also improve the acceleration and throttle position of the electronically controlled units on today’s cars. Many are pre-set to gradually open up to 100 per cent so there is minimized wheel-spin, but the Max Energy Sport changes the curve to go wide-open on demand. The rev-limiter can also be increased or decreased up to 500RPM, in increments of 100 rpm, to gain the most out of your motor and mods. The OEMs typically set it lower to prevent warranty claims, but if you properly warm your car up and change the oil on time, more RPMs are safe. Manufacturers also put top speed limiters in place, so the speed rating on the tires is not exceeded. However, if you have upgraded you wheels and tires, you can use the Max Energy Sport to change the top speed limiter and push the car further than before.

The system also interfaces through your computer to receive internet updates as soon as they are available. There is no packing up the unit and shipping it back to the tuner for a re-flash, simply download the new software and enjoy the benefits of the latest tune. With all of these features and power updates, the Hypertech Max Energy Sport is a solid tuning solution for those with minor mods on their VQ37DE-powered Nissan or Infiniti. It is priced so competitively, it’s like getting an OBDII code reader for free. Hypertech also produces tuning solutions for Mazda, Subaru, Mitsubishi and Honda. With ease of use, internet updates and extra features, the Max Energy Sport gets top marks from us.
