Tokyo Auto Salon 2025 is set to play host to one of the most blasphemous, cutting-edge things Nissan has ever done in the form of Nissan's factory converted R32 GT-R EV. That's right, the iconic RB26 is done, and in its place is a set of batteries. There's a Mechagodzilla joke in there somewhere, so we'll leave that to your imagination. Full specs and information have yet to be revealed, but we wager it's safe to assume they will keep the platform's AWD nature with a set of electric motors for each corner.
Construction on the R32 EV began quite a while back. Some key differences from the EV concept featured in the hero shot include vibrant orange brake calipers, the removal of front fog lights, clear windows replacing the previously tinted glass, and an unmistakable EV charging cable now emerging from the former fuel filler flap.
While some purists may balk at the electrified direction, there’s no denying the instant torque and straight-line speed an EV brings to the table - not to mention the potential unlocked by advanced power delivery programs. But it does feel somewhat soulless and sacrilegious given the car's history and our personal love for it. Looking ahead, it wouldn’t be a stretch to imagine some form of electrification in the next generation GT-R, and maybe this project serves as a hint at that.
This reveal comes as part of the brand’s broader plans for the 2025 Tokyo Auto Salon, kicking off in January. Among the anticipated highlights: the latest iteration of the Z, a Nismo-tuned Ariya, and a Rogue/X-Trail ‘unwind’ edition. The latter brings rugged styling cues to the ever-popular crossover segment - an aesthetic that continues to resonate with a wide audience on this side of the globe.
