It seems that at the start of every DMCC series season that rain and wet conditions are in the forecast. Sure enough, Round 1 of the 2014 DMCC series, which took place at the RiverSide Speedway in St Croix, Quebec on Sunday, May 25, 2014, was a wet one.
Besides the wet conditions, the event itself started off good. During the first driver’s meeting of the day, I spotted Scion Racing driver, Pat Cyr, out with his FR-S and showing-off its new livery. The judges made it very clear to the drivers that with the wet conditions they were going to be very strict during this event. Practice started and the drivers were already pushing hard and getting used to the track conditions. Right off the bat, both Max and his father Claude Poirier were driving as if it was bone-dry out; it was really fun to watch!
Qualifications had Jeff Laflamme put down an insane pass that got him the top qualifying spot. Pat Cyr battled all day and tried to get his car set-up properly but sadly was not able to make it happen and failed to qualify.
Top 16 was very interesting. From super-tight tandems between Claude Poirier and Pierre Gauthier, to Alex Gosselin performing a pit manoveur on Martin Langlois. Great 8 also had some interesting battles as last year’s champion, Francis Tasse, faced number one qualifier, Jeff Lalflamme. When these two usually face-off the tandems are insane, but sadly this time it was not the case. Jeff was super aggressive and went off-course gifting the win to Francis.
Final 4 came down to Jonathan Guitard, Max Poirier, Kevin Morin and Francis Tasse. Jonathan beat Kevin to fight for the win. This is where it got a little odd. Francis's car broke down giving Max the win. On Max's by-run, his suspension broke and gave the win for RD1 to Jonathan. Francis was then able to fix his car to compete for the concession round against Kevin Morin and he was able to get the win!
Final standings of DMCC Round 1 – 1st: Jonathan Guitard, 2nd: Max Poirier, 3rd: Francis Tasse. Another award was also given out to Eric Paridis who had the highest entry speed of the event at 148 km/h!
Next round is in two weeks and will be taking place at the Circuit ICAR in Mirabel.
