A Toyota 86 Powered by a Hypercraft Electric Motor: Scalar Performance's SCR1

One of our Top 10 EVs of SEMA 2022 for enthusiasts was this innovative club racer you see here: The SCR1 from Scalar Performance.

We got a build breakdown of the engineering behind this project thanks to both of its founders, Joel Fallaise and Brian Bourne. From an engineering standpoint, the build is remarkable. The chassis is a brand new Toyota 86, with its OEM drivetrain pulled out and replaced by a battery that runs the length of the car from the front axles all the way to the rear, and a Hypercraft electric motor mated to a gear reduction and differential system which sits in the rear above the OEM differential location.

So much went into this vehicle on the tech side. From safety features that far exceed those of Formula E, to live telemetry and data logging capabilities, the innovation is exciting. While this is still a prototype, we can certainly expect to see more of these in the near future as a turn-key EV racecar. We can’t wait!
